What is the Global 4-H Network Summit?

The Global 4-H Network Summit is an opportunity for 4-H youth, staff and volunteers—from over 70 countries around the world, representing 7 million youth—to come together to network, share resources and knowledge and celebrate the successes of the global 4-H movement!

When is the 2017 Global 4-H Network Summit? Where is it being held?

The 2017 Global 4-H Network Summit will take place from July 11-14 in Ottawa, Ontario at the Shaw Centre in the heart of Canada’s capital city.

The theme of the 2017 Global 4-H Network Summit is “Empowering Youth. Growing Global Citizens.”

Who can attend the Global 4-H Network Summit?

All 4-H youth members (aged 16-25), volunteers and professionals around the world, who are recognized in good standing with a 4-H organization are eligible to attend the Global 4-H Network Summit.

There will be select like-minded professionals, decision-makers, dignitaries and partners also invited to participate in advancing the 4-H movement and Positive Youth Development around the world.

I’m interested in attending. How do I apply?

If you are a Canadian 4-H youth member, professional or volunteer leader, please contact your provincial 4-H council to learn how to be selected to attend the Global 4-H Network Summit. Provinces will be making selections in November and December 2016.

I was not selected as a delegate by my province. Can I still register online?

Only delegates from outside Canada and the U.S. are able to register on the 2017 Global 4-H Network Summit website. Due to the number of total spots available, only Canadian delegates selected by their provincial council will be able to attend the 2017 Global 4-H Network Summit.

Is there a cost for registration? What does it include?

Please contact your provincial 4-H association to confirm the cost of registration and payment process.

Who takes care of booking travel and accommodations?

Airfare and accommodations for selected Canadian 4-H youth, professionals, and leaders will be booked through 4-H Canada’s internal registration process.

What if my spouse wants to join me in Ottawa?

Your spouse is free to join you, however they will be responsible for their own travel, meals and accommodations. If your 4-H country is organizing your accommodations for you based on double occupancy, having your spouse join you may result in additional fees.

Should they wish to take part in the signature events each evening, a small number of tickets will be available for purchase depending on the evening and space available.

What programming and activities will take place at the event?

Each day of the event will be focused on a thematic area of programming as follows:

  • July 11 – Community Engagement & Communication
  • July 12 – Science & Technology
  • July 13 – Sustainable Agriculture & Food Security
  • July 14 – The Environment & Healthy Living

The days will kick off with a keynote speaker, followed by workshops throughout the day, focused on the day’s theme. Each day will wrap up with a signature event that celebrates the day’s theme and allows for delegates to experience Ottawa, Canadian heritage and have fun meeting and mingling with one another.

There will also be other activities and opportunities to learn outside of the workshops, notably during the Global Opportunities Expo.

What kind of content will the workshops cover?

Workshops will be focused on advancing the field of youth development and the 4-H movement by introducing new curriculum/toolkits, new delivery models, innovative programming, or technology that can be replicated globally. This may include case studies or teaching of specific skill sets, and will be geared towards a youth or adult audience, based on the stream of programming they fall into.

Workshops will fall into the daily themes and cover topics that include, but are not limited to:

  • Research
  • Program excellence
  • Skills and capacity building
  • Organizational leadership and governance
  • Brand and communications
  • Fundraising
  • Administration
  • Risk management
  • Policy development
  • Stakeholder engagement and public /private partnerships

Workshop presenter bios will be available in late 2016 and the full conference program will be available in early 2017.

What language(s) will the program be offered in and is translation available?

The program for the Global 4-H Network Summit will be conducted in English, the official language of the Global 4-H Network Board. French translation will also be made available if needed.

What is the Global 4-H Opportunities Expo?

The Global 4-H Opportunities Expo will take place at the Shaw Centre on July 13 and 14, alongside the 2017 Global 4-H Network Summit. Over the two days, delegates, stakeholders, guests, as well as media, will explore the Expo, discovering opportunities for resources, programs, careers, post-secondary education and partnerships, while learning more about the brands and values of the organizations on-site.

What other opportunities are there to get involved during the Global 4-H Network Summit?

There will be many opportunities for the 4-H community, partners and stakeholders to get involved! “Job descriptions” are being created for various delegate and volunteer roles at the Global 4-H Network Summit. These may include event volunteers, chaperones, emcees, workshop moderators and youth reporters. Information on these opportunities will be available in early 2017.

If you are a member of the global 4-H community (outside of Canada or the U.S.), there are a number of ways you can register to attend the 2017 Global 4-H Network Summit as a delegate.

  1. Register as a 4-H professional or leader
  2. Register as a 4-H youth member
  3. Apply for one of our 20 Summit Awards.

If you are a member of the Canadian or U.S. 4-H community, please refer to the “Canada” or “U.S.” FAQ for information on how to apply.

When does registration open for the global 4-H community? When does registration close?

Registration on the 2017 Global 4-H Network Summit website will open for global delegates on November 1, 2016—which is also Global 4-H Day! Registration will remain open until all spots are full, and is on a first come first serve basis.

Is there a cost for registration? What does it include?

The cost for registration for all delegates is $800.00 CAD, (which is roughly equivalent to $600.00 USD).

This will include all meals during the Global 4-H Network Summit (including breakfast and health breaks), the full Global 4-H Network Summit program, as well as local transportation, admission and meals for the evening signature events of the Global 4-H Network Summit.

Accommodations for all 4-H youth members in the Global 4-H Network Summit’s Youth Village at the University of Ottawa will also be included in this cost of registration. A youth member is 16-25 years old and a participant in 4-H programming.

4-H professionals and leaders

4-H organizations are responsible for booking their own airfare and accommodations for professionals and leaders.

Global 4-H youth

4-H organizations outside Canada will be responsible for booking their own airfare and accommodations for youth, with the exception of the 20 Summit Award recipients. Airfare for Summit Award recipients will be handled by the Summit organizers.

All youth accommodations will be handled by the Global Summit organizers.

Is there preferred accommodations available?

There are two (2) group reservation blocks available in hotels close to the Shaw Conference Centre, at the Novotel Ottawa and at the The Westin Ottawa with prices
ranging from $199 – $219 (CAD) per night, based on double occupancy. These blocks
of rooms are first come first serve, with rates guaranteed until June 9, 2017, or until
the allocated rooms have been booked.

There are many other accommodations within walking distance that we can refer you to if you require different price levels or if our hotel partners are full.

What is the process for obtaining a travel visa?

Each country will be responsible for securing their own travel visa. 4-H Canada and the Global 4-H Network Summit organizers will, however, provide resources and support as available.
