Day 4 of the Global 4-H Network Summit

July 14, 2017

That’s a wrap, folks! The final day of the 2017 Global 4-H Network Summit has come and gone. The past week has been a whirlwind of incredible learning opportunities for everyone involved.

Day four’s theme was The Environment and Healthy Living. Delegates had the chance to attend informative workshops and sessions with a focus on building emotional and environmental skills.

The keynote speaker for the day was Krysta Harden, the Vice-President of Public Affairs at DuPont. Krysta’s background with 4-H, though unknowing at the time, set the stage for her career path in the future.

“4-H taught me my self-value as a woman in the agriculture industry,” said Krysta. “I didn’t know at the time that women in agriculture would become such a passion in my life.”

Workshops through the day stuck with these themes, with sessions on breaking the stigma of mental health, how to go green by reducing, reusing, and recycling, and understanding LGBTQ+ youth and implications on international 4-H programming, and more.

The strength of the global 4-H movement depends on strong, healthy regional 4-H organizations, and these workshops helped to raise awareness within our global community.

The entire summit saw a plethora of incredible keynote speakers, panelists, delegates, and volunteers come together to share their unique perspectives that they bring from their 4-H groups from around the world.

“I had so many moments that tugged my heart strings,” said Mackenzie Kerr, a delegate from Prince George, Canada. “It was so inspirational and emotional to listen to delegates speak so passionately about what they’re doing in their communities. This was an incredible experience.”

Each day focused on a different theme that related to the fundamentals behind 4-H on a global scale. These themes helped to start conversations on topics that some people may have never thought about.

Day one started on with a focus on community engagement and communications, where delegates heard from keynote speaker Krista Scaldwell, as well as attended workshops focused on building communication between different 4-H groups that share a common brand.

Day two has keynote speaker Ann Makosinski speak about her innovative inventions, which flowed right into the theme for the day: science and technology. Workshops for the day involved a science and technology showcase, 4-H Ag innovators innovating solutions for a sustainable future, and how to take a proper photo, just to name a few.

The third day of the summit had the theme of Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security, with a keynote speech from motivational speaker Chris Koch, a farmer who was born without arms or legs. Building off Koch’s inspirational speech, delegates attended workshops on saving the planet under your feet, exploring the world of AgMagic, soil leadership and the good growth plan, and much, much more.

This phenomenal group of people gathered from across the world to learn from each other and their different cultures, but always found one common link: the 4-H brand.

Inspirational stories, innovative technologies and incredible developments in the world of science were the just the tip of the iceberg for the 2017 Global 4-H Network Summit. Beyond that, the new relationships forged between all parties involved with the summit will continue these important conversations long after the convention has wrapped.

A big thank you to everyone involved with this year’s summit in Canada’s capital city. Without all of your help, we would have never been able to have had the success that we did. See you at the next global summit!
